Radiant Orchid?

Well, I’m sure you’ve heard by now. Pantone announced its color of the year for 2014, Radiant Orchid.

What do you think? I have to be honest, I was not thrilled at first. You have to understand, I am a child of the 80s, where purple was often paired with all shades of pink, creating an overly girly, frilly concoction. As a child, I vividly remember telling everyone my favorite colors were pink and purple, not separately but together. I paired my hot pink skinny jeans with a chunky purple knit sweater and was sure to add BOTH my pink and purple legwarmer socks over my jeans. So ya, first images were not great!

Fast forward to the current decade, and it starts to grow on me! I just needed to get past that original image and figure out what other colors I could pair with it. I put together a couple ideas, but I think this Fashion Color Report is what sealed the deal. I was going to LOVE working with this modern palette!

I am loving the Cayenne and Celosia Orange colors in there next to the Orchid. These three colors together would make an amazing color palette for your nursery, which got me thinking. I ended up with two totally different styles based on the same palette; it is so versatile! I knew I had to start with something spicy, these colors just brought to mind the rich colors of Moroccan architecture, textiles and all the wares at the souk. I came up with these patterns for the custom baby bedding:

What do you think? I just love the combination of colors and am obsessing over the wall art blocks by Red Tile Studio. I really wanted to show how versatile this palette could be, so I went in the opposite direction with the second idea. The purple and oranges together kept bringing to mind the fun array of monster/’ugly’ dolls out there right now. I went off that and came up with these bright prints for crib bedding:

And this is the overall design board:

The two are totally different, right? The second board even features the same fabulous Room & Board glider, but with these cute little monsters, you can change the whole feel of the palette.

So it turns out Pantone knows what they’re doing:). I’m completely on board now, how about you??
