The Everyday Rule: Wash Cold & Keep It Gentle
For most Modified Tot textiles, care is refreshingly simple. Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach and harsh fabric treatments, which can affect the color, print, and feel of the fabric over time.
Unless noted below, our washable pieces can be machine dried on a low or gentle setting.
And because nursery life happens, there’s no need to be precious about them. These pieces were designed to be used, washed, loved, and used again.
Crib Sheets, Changing Pad Covers & Everyday Essentials
Sheets, Changing Pad Covers, Nursing Pillow Covers, Car Seat Covers, & Swaddle Sets
Our jersey knit everyday essentials are made for exactly that—everyday use. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
Wash whenever needed, whether you’re dealing with the realities of babyhood or simply giving the nursery a refresh.
Quilts: Better With Every Wash
Our quilts are designed to become part of the story of your nursery. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
One of our favorite things about them? They get softer with every wash. Over time, the fabric relaxes into that perfectly lived-in, heirloom feel that makes a quilt even better after years of use.
If desired, quilts can be ironed on an appropriate fabric setting.
Muslin: Embrace the Crinkle
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry low.
After its first wash, muslin naturally develops its signature soft, lightly crinkled texture. That relaxed finish is part of the beauty of the fabric—not something that needs to be pressed away.
The more muslin is washed and loved, the softer and more comfortable it becomes.
Minky: Keep It Plush
Our minky pieces are wonderfully easy to care for. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low.
To protect that ultra-soft, velvety texture, do not iron minky. High heat can damage the plush fibers.
Skip the iron and let the fabric do what it does best: stay soft, cozy, and ready for snuggles.
A Little Extra Care: Rail Covers & Crib Skirts
Our rail covers and crib skirts are pre-washed before they arrive to you, so there’s no need to wash them before placing them in the nursery.
Because these tailored pieces are designed to hold their shape beautifully, we recommend washing them only as needed.
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Do not machine dry.
- Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry.
- Iron as needed using an appropriate cotton setting.
Washing less frequently helps preserve the structure, finish, and tailored look of these pieces for years to come.
Curtains: Wash Only When Needed
Like our rail covers and skirts, Modified Tot curtains are pre-washed and ready to hang when they arrive.
For the best drape and finish, wash curtains only when necessary.
- Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle.
- Use a mild detergent.
- Do not machine dry.
- Hang to dry.
- Iron as needed using an appropriate fabric setting.
Hanging your curtains while they finish drying can also help the fabric naturally relax back into its beautiful drape.
Diaper Bags: Spot Clean Only
Our diaper bags require a little different care than our nursery textiles. To preserve their construction, hardware, and finish, do not machine wash or machine dry.
- Spot clean only using a soft, damp cloth and mild cleaner as needed.
- Allow to air dry completely.
- Do not iron.
- Do not machine dry.
For stubborn spots, start gently rather than using aggressive cleaners or scrubbing.
Rugs: It Depends on the Style
Care instructions for our rugs vary depending on the specific construction and material. Some Modified Tot rugs are machine washable, while others require different care.
If you’re unsure how to clean your rug, simply reach out to us with your order number and we’ll help you confirm the correct care instructions for your piece.
Can I Iron It?
For most Modified Tot fabric pieces, yes. A light press can help restore that crisp, finished look after washing.
The exception is minky. Never iron minky fabric, as direct heat can damage its soft fibers. Diaper bags should not be ironed either.
For everything else, use an appropriate fabric setting and avoid excessive heat.
A Few Designer Care Notes
- Cold + gentle is your safest combination. It helps preserve both color and fabric.
- Wash only when needed. This is especially important for rail covers, crib skirts, and curtains.
- Quilts get softer with every wash. A slightly lived-in finish is part of their heirloom charm.
- Muslin is supposed to crinkle. Its relaxed texture will become more noticeable after washing.
- Skip the iron on minky. Heat and plush fibers are not friends.
- When in doubt, ask us. We’re always happy to look up the care instructions for your specific piece.
