The Feeling

School colors. Letter jackets. Championship seasons and the pride of being part of the team. The traditions you grow into—and eventually carry with you.

Varsity marks a shift in boyhood. Things feel a little more grown up, a little more confident, and a little more his own. Inspired by old gymnasiums, team pennants, varsity letters, and generations of school spirit, the collection takes those familiar traditions and gives them a fresh point of view. Clean silhouettes and stronger color keep the room feeling modern, while collected sporting pieces and collegiate details give it history. It’s not about recreating the past—it’s about making those traditions his own.

Chapter Four · Tradition

Every design decision begins with a feeling. For Varsity, that feeling was the pride and tradition of school days—letter jackets, team colors, championship pennants, old gymnasiums, and the seasons everyone remembers. Rather than recreating a vintage locker room, we paired those nostalgic references with clean silhouettes, stronger color, and modern furnishings. The result feels collected but current: a nursery rooted in tradition, designed for the boy who’s beginning to make it his own.

Guiding Principles

  1. 1. Let Tradition Lead : Begin with tailored furniture, classic silhouettes, and enduring materials, then layer in the personality.
  2. 2. Borrow from the Varsity Wardrobe: Look to letterman jackets, chenille lettering, wool, leather, stripes, and collegiate details for inspiration without recreating them literally.
  3. 3. Layer Pattern with Intention: Pair a tailored plaid with a larger-scale version to create depth and contrast without adding visual clutter.
  4. 4. Mix Old with New: Pair walnut, worn leather, vintage artwork, and sporting keepsakes with clean-lined furniture and modern brass lighting to keep the room feeling current.
  5. 5. Personalize the Tradition: Monograms, pennants, jersey numbers, and meaningful keepsakes make the room feel like his story rather than simply a sports room.
  6. 6. Suggest the Story—Don't Tell It: A worn football, an old team photograph, or a single varsity letter says more than a room filled with literal sports décor.

HOW I'D PUT IT TOGETHER

From Holly's Desk

Once the foundation is in place, this is where I start layering in the details that make the room feel collected and personal.
